Tonight I have a writing assignment due by midnight and all I can do is sit and stare at this blank computer screen. Nothing is coming forth and I have been procrastinating for 3 hours. This writer’s block is getting ridiculous.

Did your parents teach you about banking accounts and credit cards? Mine did not and I have had to learn the hard way how to manage my money. But at least I have always worked and had money. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to not have a job and be a student instead. Learning how to manage the little money a college student has must be tougher – they cannot afford to waste the little money they have on over limit fees, late charges, or even ATM fees. That is what I am supposed to be writing about, but I am drawing nothing but blanks.

It’s hard to give advice when you don’t know enough about the subject to be an authority on it. So I have read all kinds of articles on the internet and think I have a basic understanding. Now I have to rework the information and write it in a style that be interesting to college students.

Wish me luck!

When I am out and about I pay attention to little things in the businesses where I shop and even the houses along the street on my way in and out of the neighborhood. I look at the shopping center to see if it is vibrant with lots of shoppers and a full parking lot. Or are there a lot of vacant storefronts with “For Lease” signs in the windows? What kinds of cars are parking in the parking lots and along the street? Or they late model cars in good repair? Or old junkers that need paint job or other repairs?

When I stopped in my favorite gyro place to get lunch, I noticed that the bakery case was almost empty and the few slices of cheesecake did not look fresh. The cake plates with baklava and Persian cookies were missing. I asked the clerk about it and he said that the baker had quit to take a job in marketing. They need a baker to bring them a couple dozen fresh baked desserts every day. I would love to do that! But I doubt I could make enough money to support myself off the couple dozen dessert for just this one restaurant.

If I could get a couple more restaurants to take my baked goods, that might work. There’s a fine line behind baking a few dozen desserts on your own and opening a whole bakery – which I would love to do but I just don’t have the startup money to do that. I’m going to investigate it a little further and see if I can make it work. I don’t want to see a good opportunity like this go to waste.

Most commercials on TV are easy enough to ignore unless they really push my button on the high level of annoyance. Like last year, the SuperBowl launched a new commercial campaign with large children character figures dancing around with the song “How do you like me now?” playing. It was cute the first two or three times, even though I had no idea who the characters would supposed to be. Turns out the characters are from some kids shows on cable, but I’ve never seen the show. They played that commercial on all the channels over and over and over and over and I got so sick of hearing that song that I wanted to throw a show at the TV the very next week.

Now there is a commercial for Progressive Insurance that is horrible. You know Flo, the annoying girl with the dark hair in a 1960′s hairband and flip? Some of her commercials are funny, but this new one is just annoying. There is some guy who sings a long note, dragging it out WAYYYY too long, waiting for Flo to push a button so he can stop singing. But Flo is distracted and doesn’t get around to pushing the button for a VERYYYY long time. OMFG – I want to throw a shoe at the TV when that commercial comes on!!!!!

This weekend is the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. That means green beer and lots of shenanigans! I plan on staying home – there is such a focus on drinking and partying that too many people get drunk and do stupid things. I don’t feel safe on the road when I know so many people have been drinking. I call this Amateur Night.

I remember being in school on a Saint Patrick’s Day and I was not wearing green. My mother had not said anything about wearing green – we aren’t Irish and she didn’t celebrate the holiday. But I wore a regular skirt and blouse that had no green on it and I was getting pinched all day long by other kids who took advantage of the day to be a pest! Ever since that day in the fourth grade, I make sure that I am wearing green on St. Patrick’s day!!!
