For a long time I have avoided the grocery aisle that has endless rows of breakfast cereal. For one thing, I don’t really like breakfast. I’m not hungry when I wake up and I don’t feel like cooking anything in the morning.
For another thing, so many breakfast cereals are filled with sugar and carbs, that I don’t feel like they are healthy for me. I would rather have a slice of raisin bread or half an English muffin than a bowl of cold cereal and milk.
But now I am bored with breakfast and need something different. I watched a Dr. Oz show where he said that breakfast should be planned the night before so you don’t have to make any decisions in the morning. According to Dr. Oz, our brains take a while to wake up and fully engage to make good decisions, so anything you can do ahead of time for the first hour of your morning will help get through the morning easier.
Dr. Oz suggests a cup of Greek yogurt and a handful of trail mix to start the day. He says he keeps a little bit of trail in his pocket throughout the day so that if he gets hungry or feels like he needs a quick energy boost, he can toss a handful of raisins and nuts into his mouth and not have to stop to eat an entire, filling meal.
I have to say that Dr. Oz is thin and looks healthy. So maybe his routine is working for him. But I wonder how much of his thinness has to do with genetics and being so active during the day. He rarely sits sit and is always on the move. Perhaps he even has a little touch of ADHD?
Anyway, I am going to buy a box of cereal next time I am at the grocery store. I will look for something made of rice instead of wheat or corn, and look for something that has no sugar added. I wonder if there is anything besides Rice Krispies that meets those requirements?
