Greener Thumb App UX/UI Design

Many people buy expensive indoor plants to decorate and add life to their space, but don’t have enough knowledge to care for these plants properly. This often result in them either giving up on plant ownership entirely or spending more on continually replacing sick or dead plants. Greener Thumb provides users with individualized recommendations and advice throughout the plant acquisition and ownership cycle to help them keep their plants healthy with minimal effort and no stress.

Discovering User Needs

I began by mapping the many different factors related to indoor plant ownership (such as some of the motivations for purchasing plants and aspects of a plant care routine) to brainstorm where my app could help.

Next, I interviewed a user in the app’s target demographic and constructed a proto-persona, Emma, and customer journey map based on the information I gathered.

Translating User Needs Into Features

I developed a story map to chart the details of four components of the app: the profile, personal plant catalog, recommended care routine, and diagnostic/monitoring tool for healing a sick plant. Based on the requirements outlined in the story mapping exercise, I then created user flows for several key actions in the app.

I chose to focus on the process of adding a plant into your collection by taking a photo for the next phases of the project.

Designing, Iterating, and Testing

As I iterated on the design, I produced low-, medium-, and high-fidelity prototypes and conducted 2 rounds of usability testing with 2 users in each round.

Branding and Illustration

I wanted to give the app a clean, playful feel that would make the experience fun and enjoyable for users, since they would be using it during their leisure time. I also drew three custom illustrations to add character.
